2019 NATIONAL CHAMPIONSHIP

Willow Bank Yacht Club will host the 2019 FD National Championships on 19, 20, 21 July 2019.

We plan to train local sailors as qualified  FD crews, should traveling skippers need a competent crew.

Please register early so we can have trained crews available.

Old FDs are welcome and will be awarded trophies.

We have camping on the grounds plus local hotels, B&Bs and inns in the village.

Cazenovia College will have some dorm rooms available for 65 bucks a night + 12 for linen which is probably the best deal in town.

The college is a few blocks from the club.

A ten to 15 minute walk.

2019 FLEET 2

2019

Willow Bank Yacht Club is a small club located on a small lake in the village of Cazenovia in Central New York.

Camping is available on the club grounds.

The club has a ramp launch as well as a hoist.

Club races are held Sundays throughout the summer.

We have 3 FDs in the local fleet.

Two FDs race regularly with the third boat making an occasional appearance.

We are apparently the only fleet still holding scheduled Sunday races on the east coast.

Fleet 2 and WBYC host the annual Cuspidor Regatta in July and will host the FD National Championship in 2019.

Visit the Willow Bank Yacht Club web site http://willowbankyc.com for more details of what club facilities are available.

Cuspidor 2011

After almost three weeks of very nice sailing wind in Cazenovia, the Saturday of the 2011 Cuspidor presented us with very little wind and no consistent direction.  The wind ranged from 0 to perhaps 5 mph and swung through about 220 degrees from southeast to northeast.  Sunday morning was somewhat better, but still a bit unpredictable.  The races really weren't over until they were over as the finishes of many races were very close.  In the end, it was probably the experience of dealing with the lake type wind conditions that allowed Carl Boller and Jeff Barbero to pull out wins in six of the seven races to win the regatta. Chris Liberti with Katie Coupland sailed very well in the Lindsay previously owned by Peter and Barbara Wells and captured second place overall.  After exchanging third and fourth places with Tom Lewis and George Saggal, Zach White and Nick Iannacone finished third largely on the strength of winning the third race on Saturday.  Despite the difficult conditions the  participants seemed to have a good time as we were able to get some good trapezing on a few legs of Sunday's races and a very nice dinner outside at the Brae Loch in on Saturday evening.

Cuspidor 2013

Congratulations to Kate Coupland with Chris Liberti as crew. Kate is the first female winner of the Cuspidor in it's 51 year history. They sailed an outstanding regatta and the win was well deserved.

Thanks to a strong front moving through the area, we saw South winds about 8 to 12 mph through most of Saturday, increasing to near 15 mph by the final race of the day. We were able to complete 6 races by 3:00 pm. Sunday began much like Saturday, at least for the first race. Then came the rain, and with it dying winds. After a decent first leg of the final race, the wind began to die. At least that was until the middle of the final run. The wind began to pick up and we finished in a blast that at points was well above 15 and pouring rain (1 inch in 1/2 hour).

The racing was fairly close for many of the races which made for an enjoyable event. The wind blast at the end of the last race produced one of the highlights of the week-end. It came on so suddenly while we were reaching to the leeward mark with spinnakers flying that it was difficult to react and there was a scramble to get spinnakers down. Kate and Chris reacted by Kate falling (jumping?) overboard. The picture below shows Chris single handing the FD on a three sail reach. It didn't last long as the inevitable capsize came moments after this picture was taken, but it looked great while it lasted. PS: After a long swim, Kate got back aboard and they finished the race. The hazy picture is due to the heavy rain.
